Stephen Catlin to speak at MGAA's annual conference
01/06/2017 – Stephen Catlin the founder of Catlin Group Limited and until recently Executive Deputy Chairman of XL Catlin, will be the keynote speaker at the Managing General Agents’ Association’s third annual conference and capacity exchange taking place in London on Tuesday, 4th July. Catlin, an insurance market veteran of over 40 years, will address an estimated 500 representatives of managing general agents (MGAs), capacity providers and suppliers at the event. He will share his experience and the insight gained from establishing and growing the market-leading underwriting business that shares his name. Also, highlighting the importance of professionalism in the MGA sector.
The event, exploring the themes of evolution and revolution in the sector, provides those attending with the opportunity to share ideas on how to grow and develop their businesses at a time of significant challenge and change in the sector.
Delegates will also hear from sector and industry experts in two panel debates covering the growth, evolution and sustainability of different MGA models and the opportunities that exist from the insurtech revolution.
The capacity exchange that runs throughout the conference provides MGAs with the opportunity to meet and discuss business opportunities directly with over 60 capacity providers and service suppliers supporting the sector.

Stephen Catlin
Stephen Catlin began his insurance career in 1973 joining BL Evens & Others on Syndicate 264 at Lloyd's. In 1982 he became deputy underwriter, specialising in the excess of loss and energy accounts where he was supported as a market leader. He founded Catlin Underwriting Agencies Limited in 1984, which later became part of Catlin Group Limited.
Stephen served as the Catlin Group’s Chief Executive throughout its history and also served as the active underwriter of Lloyd’s Syndicate 1003 and later Syndicate 2003 until May 2003.
He assumed the position of Executive Deputy Chairman of XL Group plc in May 2015 upon the completion of XL’s acquisition of Catlin Group Limited.
From September 1996 to January 2002, he was the Lloyd's nominated Director of Equitas Holdings Limited. He served as Chairman of the Lloyd's Market Association, the trade association representing the interests of Lloyd's underwriters and underwriting agents, from May 2000 until January 2003. He was a member of the Council of Lloyd's from 2002 to 2004 and a member of the Lloyd's Franchise Board from January 2003 until December 2006. He was President of the Insurance Institute of London in 2010-2011.
Stephen is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation.
He was selected as Ernst & Young’s ‘UK Entrepreneur of the Year’ in October 2011.
He was chair of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR) from January 2015 to January 2017.
Stephen was inducted into the International Insurance Society Insurance Hall of Fame in June 2015 and is Vice Chairman of the Society.
He is Chair of the Insurance Development Forum.
MGAA
The Managing General Agents' Association (MGAA) is a UK based not for profit organisation dedicated to representing true MGAs.
Formed in 2011, the MGAA also aims to provide a better understanding of what MGAs are and the contribution they make to the insurance industry.
The MGAA currently has 122 full members representing over £3.6bn of underwriting capacity. They are joined by 37 market practitioner members and 50 supplier members.
The board of elected directors leads the organisation. In addition, five separate committees deliver benefits for members with a clear aim of shaping the future of delegated underwriting.
