IMIA Qatar conference focuses on engineering insurance challenges

16 September 2016 – Addressing the underwriting challenges for engineering insurance classes created by emerging risks will be at the top of the agenda for the 49th The International Association of Engineering Insurers (IMIA) annual conference taking place in Doha, Qatar from 1st to 5th October 2016. The conference which, brings together engineering insurance practitioners and experts from 100 companies in 33 countries, will focus on the impact and critical issues of key emerging risks including cyber and how it applies to engineering insurance and the collateral consequences of war and terrorism risks for engineering and construction insurance.

Oscar Treceno, IMIA Chairman, said: “The challenges posed by emerging risks such as cyber and the sophisticated nature of war and terrorism are not limited to a particular class of insurance. Our members are at the forefront of understanding and sharing solutions to address the impact on key engineering and construction classes to ensure underwriting decisions and policy coverage structure reflects and responds effectively to these issues.”

The conference is sponsored by Qatar Central Bank and hosted by Qatar General Insurance and Reinsurance Company (QGIRCO). This year will be the first time the conference has taken place in an Arab country.

Mr. Treceno continued: “We are privileged to have the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Abdulla Bin Saoud Al-Thani, Governor of Qatar Central Bank and to be hosted by Qatar General Insurance and Reinsurance Company.

“The role of engineering insurance in supporting the global economy is crucial and perhaps no more so than in countries such as Qatar. With major infrastructure and construction projects supporting their National Vision 2030 development plan, and events such as the FIFA World Cup in 2022, it is fitting that we will be meeting there in October.”

The annual event provides a forum for sharing current knowledge and best practice affecting the sector developed by the Association’s expert working groups. In addition to cyber and war and terrorism risks, delegates will be discussing cost overrun and project financing, natural catastrophe modelling and the latest developments in boiler technology.
